Forbidden City / 故宫 Gu Gong
Next to the Tian An Men Square and in the very center of Beijing is the Forbidden City, the former residence of the Chinese emperors. The Forbidden City covers 720,000 square meters, making it one of the largest palaces ever constructed. It was built from 1406 to 1420 by a million workers and home of the Chinese Emperors for nearly 5 centuries. It has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1987. Inside of the Forbidden City is the Palace Museum, which holds a large number of ancient Chinese items. An English tape guide tour is available for additional 30 Yuan.

Tian An Men Square / 天安门广场 Tian An Men Guang Chang
With more than 40 hectares, the Tian An Men Square in Beijing is not only one of the most famous city squares in the world, but also one of the largest. It is separated from the Forbidden City by the Tian An Gate. The Tian An Men connects the Forbidden City, the Great Hall Of The People, Qian Men and the National Museum of China. The Mao Zedong Mausoleum is located in the center of Tian An Men Square, and entrace is free. |

Summer Palace / 颐和园 Yi He Yuan
The Summer Palace in Beijing was originally built by the empress dowager Cixi to provide a comfortable resort during Beijing’s hot summer. With the large Kunming Lake and the Longevity Hill next to it, the Summer Palace still fulfills that role today for tourists as well as for citizens of Beijing. The lake and the hill are artificially made, and around them one finds a number of temples, pavilions, halls and bridges.

Great Wall / 长城 Chang Cheng
Stretching over more than 6300 km, the Great Wall is the longest building in the world, and maybe China’s most famous tourist spot. The first reported construction dates back more than 2000 years. Construction on the Great Wall continued through several dynasties, the last of which was the Ming, about 500 years ago. The most popular access point to the Great Wall is Ba Da Ling (八达岭), which can be reached by bus 919. Jin Shan Ling (金山岭) and Si Ma Tai (司马台) are less frequented by tourist and considered very beautiful spots of the Great Wall.

Temple of Heaven /天坛 Tian Tan
The Temple of Heaven is a Taoist temple complex in Xuan Wu, in the south of Beijing. It is dominated by the 38 meters tall Hall for Prayer of Good Harvest (祈年殿, Qi Nian Dian), which is built on three levels of marble stone. The whole temple is more than 1200 meters long, with old trees carpeting the sides. |
